Parents assume: a good kick or swing is about strength, and it just develops.
Actually: the mature instep kick is coachable ~6–7, and it's gated by where the plant foot goes — not power. Striking (bat/racket) is the most complex fundamental skill and lags throwing by ~a stage, so a real rotational swing often waits until 8–10+ — but the same rotation cues start earlier.

Kick: angled approach → plant the support foot beside the ball, pointing at the target → cock the knee, whip the leg, ankle locked/toe-down so contact is on the laces → full follow-through, opposite arm out. Strike: side-on, weight loaded back → short step → uncoil in sequence (pelvis, then trunk, then arms) → long arc, head still, follow through around the body.

The rate-limiters
Kick: (1) plant-foot placement + approach — the gateway; (2) ankle lock / laces contact. Strike: side-on stance + step/weight transfer, then hip-before-trunk rotation (the swing's version of "step + twist your belly"). A quiet head supports both.

Readiness & the bright line
Contact first. One cue per rep.
- The child can already reliably contact the object (and, for kicking, briefly balance on one foot). If they can't, build success first — bigger/stationary ball, a tee, a slower approach — don't add form cues.
- One cue per rep. Coach's meta-cue: "one thing at a time."
- Avoid high-volume hard repetition and heavy bats/rackets near the growth spurt (Osgood-Schlatter, Sever's). A child growing >0.6 cm/month carries ~1.6× injury risk — deload and stop chasing power. Expect a temporary "clumsy" regression at the spurt.
